Dominus

Dominus (plural domini, femenino domina) es una palabra latina que significa maestro, propietario y más tarde, señor.

En la Edad Media, dominus se convirtió en un título feudal, señor, que es el equivalente francés de seigneur. De aquí se deriva el título de dom que se da a los eclesiásticos (esencialmente a los miembros de la Orden de San Benito), y el título español de don. Además tiene el significado del nombre personal de Dios que se vierte Jehovah del antiguo Israel.

Con el calificativo de Dominus orbis se haría referencia al poder temporal del sumo pontífice, cabeza visible de la Iglesia católica.
